I don't understand the poem, "Departmental" by Robert Frost. Do you?????

An ant on the tablecloth

Ran into a dormant moth

Of many times his size.

He showed not the least surprise.

His business wasn't with such.

He gave it scarcely a touch,

And was off on his duty run.

Yet if he encountered one

Of the hive's enquiry squad

Whose work is to find out God

And the nature of time and space,

He would put him onto the case.

Ants are a curious race;

One crossing with hurried tread

The body of one of their dead

Isn't given a moment's arrest-

Seems not even impressed.

But he no doubts report to any

With whom he crosses antennae,

And they no doubt report

To the higher up at court.

Then word goes forth in Formic:

"Death's come to Jerry McCormic,

Our selfless forager Jerry.

Will the special Janizary

Whose office it is to bury

The dead of the commissary

Go bring him home to his people.

Lay him in state on a sepal.

Wrap him for shroud in a petal.

Embalm him with ichor of nettle.

This is the word of your Queen."

I don't understand the poem, "Departmental" by Robert Frost. Do you?????
The poem is about culture, identity, and civilization. The ant colony symbolizes a rudimentary form of human civilization

What's this flower? purple, five petals, hairy stem..?

It grows in my garden, has five green sepals under the five purple petals, and a hairy stem (although the leaves which grow in a whorl around the stem are hairless and look like vine or strawberry leaves). The purple-lilac petals have veins of a deeper purple running through them.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this might be (or even its family)? sorry I haven't got a digital camera to take a picture of it!

ps. I live in Cornwall in england--fairly warm climate.

What's this flower? purple, five petals, hairy stem..?
Possibly in the Geranium/ Pelargonium family. I'm in Australia, so I'm guessing;http://www.floridata.com/index.cfm This site may help.

Could you identify this flower?please????

Ok so i have this flower project where i need to key out and then press flowers for my Highschool. I found this one flower and it is about 1 and a half feet tall, it has red leaves that when you look lower down into the stalk there is green. it has tiny white flowers that you cant see hardly unless you look through a magnifying glass...I am not certain on the following info!:

i am pretty sure it has...:

5 petals

more than two sepals

PLEASE HELP!??????!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!?

oh and i live in northern california and the flower was in my backyard among easter lillies and ferns and other various wildflowers and grasses. it is in mostly shade but it is out int he open...and...i picked it today so it is out in the spring and in april...

Could you identify this flower?please????
Could it possibly be an Epimedium? They have tiny flowers with bronze tipped foliage and flower now.

EDIT%26gt; Nope not an epimedium. Looks like a weed some sort. Anthriscus sylvestris possibly?
Reply:sorry, can't picture it, try google and look for the flower that look most like yours, good luck
Reply:Go take a picture of it and post it
Reply:You links don't work.

Can you figure out the problem and re-post. I'd love to help as I'm in N. Cal. too.
Reply:At first it sounded like a type of spurge (poinsetta), but then you seem confused on the rest of the details. Check the flower and plant again, and write down the size of the tiny white flowers, how they are arranged (in a disk, like a sunflower? Or in "umbrels" like queen anne's lace? etc), how many petals/sepals (its ok to count them together) are on each tiny little flower, what the edge of the leaves look like, whether they are hairy, whether it is a monocot or dicot, and anything else you notice about the plant.

I couldn't tell you the name without at least a picture, but fortunately many universities have sites for botanical identification. You can try USDA Plants data base (google) but the ID process might be too technical, or you can try a database like the one below.

Good luck :)
Reply:its PINKY
Reply:I am not certain but it looks like a variety of Baby's Breath.
Reply:take it to a florist
Reply:we need a picture. Or, take it to a florist or nursery or to the library and find a book on flowers.

Fertilization, think about it....Where is the egg...the ovule.

Pollen tube is male tissue, stigma is the receptor for the pollen, the central nucleus is in the ovule and is the recipient of only half of the double fertilization event.

Megaspores are female and become eggs, microspores are male and become pollen (regardless of vascular plant species). Gametophytes are haploid (ie pollen and ovule) sporophytes are diploid (usually the adult plant).

Flowers... female have pistils, males have stamens, complete means "contains all floral organs", incomplete means "missing one or more floral organs" (male flowers are missing female organs, female flowers are missing male organs).

Walnuts are heavy (don't fly), have no barbs (for catching in fur), and are not generally found around large bodies of water.

Crataegus Monogyna - Common Hawthorn?

Greetings,

I'd need to find something which deals with Crataegus Monogyna and in particular with its physiology and anatomy. In particular, I should know:

- the type of flowers, the number of petals, sepals, shape of flowers, if they're solitary flowers or inflorescences;

- something about the reproduction;

- something about the ovary position or other special features; something about the fruit;

- something about the typology of root;

- something related to the stem, its growth, how it is done (if it has got a secondary growth, sapwood, heartwood, cork...).

I've found several different things on the Internet but I've not fully answered to these 'questions'. Could you please help me?

Thanks in advance.

Please help! I've been struggling with these questions forever!?

1. Which of the following are capable of self-pollination? Explain. (There can be more than one answer)

(A) A flower with a pistil, stamens, petals, and sepals

(B) A flower with stamens and petals

(C) A flower with a pistil, petals, and sepals?

2. Which of those flowers require another flower for pollination? Explain.

Please help! I've been struggling with these questions forever!?
#1 is A as it has both a Pistil (the female reproductive organ) and Stamen (male reproductive organ)

#2 is B and C both because they only have one of the required sex organs
Reply:pistil,stamens A

petals and sepals arent involved

A B C

A can be a normals flower

B and see just have one sex so need another for pollination
Reply:Petals and sepals are irrelevant to the question of self-pollination.

To self-pollinate a flower needs both pistil and stamens. Therefore A can self-pollinate. Stamens produce pollen, so a flower with stamens only (B) can polinate another flower but cannot be pollinated. Flower C, with a pistil only, needs pollen from another flower.

Biology-- plants question?

Petals are leaf-like structures arranged in a circle at the tip of a flower stem.

Is this true or false? I'm thinking it might be "sepals" instead of "petals" making it false, but I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Biology-- plants question?
sepal is the female part in the center. stamen are the male parts around the sepal. petals are the only things that could be considered leaf-like so it should be petals.
Reply:false

A perfect flower must have all the following EXCEPT.....?

a. anthers

b. ovary

c. sepals

d. ovules

A perfect flower must have all the following EXCEPT.....?
An anther is the pollen-bearing part of the stamen. An ovary is the ovule-bearing lower part of a pistil that ripens into a fruit. A plant does not need all it's fruits to survive so it is probably this one. A sepal is one of the separate, usually green parts forming the calyx of a flower. An ovule is a minute structure in seed plants, containing the embryo sac and surrounded by the nucellus, that develops into a seed after fertilization.

In some species, unisexual (male or female) flowers are produced on separate plants. So a "male" plant would not need an ovary. Some plants have both male and female parts on one plant but other species have just the male or just the female.

I could be wrong. I'm not 100% sure. Did they pass your test back with the answer marked wrong but the teacher didn't write in the right answer but you need to know it for the final? If so, which one did you pick that was marked wrong?
Reply:c
Reply:sepals.

Plant pollination question?

Flowers that are pollinated by the wind have smaller petals and sepals than flowers that are pollinated by insects or animals. Why are small petals advantageous for the pollinating process?

Plant pollination question?
When you're wind pollinated, anything besides stamens and pistils is a waste of space and energy and does nothing but get in the way.
Reply:if the petals are large in wind pollinating flowers than stamens wont b sufficently exposed to discharge pollen grains with the slight breeze n even pistils also wont be exposed to receive the pollengrains n moreover why to waste energy in producing larger petals when there is no worry of attracting insects

Science questions i've looked everywhere!!?

how many compartments are in the cross section of the ovary?

how do the numbers of stamens, petals, and sepals compare to each other?

Science questions i've looked everywhere!!?
I'm going to assume that you're talking about angiosperms for both cases.

For the first part, I believe there are usually 2-6 ovule per ovary. One large compartment housing all of them in a single plant.

I didn't think there was a relationship between the number of stamens, petals and sepals, but if I were to guess, according to the pictures I've seen:

There are 1/2 as many petals as stamens

There are 1/3 as many sepals as stamens.

I know this isn't a great answer, but I hope it gets you started somewhere.

Do (or did they ever) your spouses/ lovers past relationships matter (non sex history)? How much?

I was listening to one of my friends talk VERY insecurely about one of the guys his now girlfriend( for 1.5 years) HAD dated. Which made me think.. i know most people talk to there spouses about there past history.. But after so long should you leave that stuff in the past... i mean im only 18 so i may just be ni-eve but if its going to hurt so bad then why talk about past love(s)? After so long in a relationship shouldn't both people just stop and take a look at how happy they are no matter the other persons past.. i mean dwell on the future. i gave him the whole sepal on she loves you now it doesn't matter, she was looking for the right one..blablabla .. i just don't think it worked... is there anything else i could do and/or say?

Do (or did they ever) your spouses/ lovers past relationships matter (non sex history)? How much?
Good question. I think it is better to leave in past. Although you can tell a lot about a person by how they talk about thier ex's. I was talking the other week to an ex about previous relationships - we didn't whilst going out - and I'm glad we didn't. As friends we take it as is - as partners we can sometimes become preoccupied. I know my friends hate it when their girlfriends talk about their ex's. A guy thing.
Reply:As a couple I think it is a good idea to talk about it after you both feel comfortable with the subject. But after a couple times i wouldn't really be willing to KEEP bringing it up because it IS the past and the person your with is the current and possibly future and the only comparison that could be made are only ones YOU make...
Reply:Well guys overthink things to much. How can you blame someone for something they did before they knew you. Thats all you really can say
Reply:i think the more experienced a man is the better. more friskya\ andthinnd wikling to things.
Reply:It is usually bad manners to bring up past history or dirty laundry. When a relationship begins, it is natural curiosity, but still focusing on who you are with now is pivotally important. If you want to compare, keep it to yourself.

That being said, the dilemma I may face in the future is that the person I have become has something to do with my ex-wife. I am grateful to her and as much as I would not want to talk about her, it is very hard. We stopped waging war and became the very best of friends. Returning to love and returning to God was my doing, but she played a part.
Reply:Well when it comes to talking about past relationships, its a two part thing. On one side of looking at it, obviously if you care enough to remember about your previous relationships, there is a part of you that is still trying to let go. Thus a good reason for talking about past relationships.

The other side of this, when you talk about your past relationships, it's showing your partner all the experiences you've gone through. For some people, they may not like people who haven't experienced all the ups and downs of being in a relationship, it's just a way of checking how serious someone is. When you tell someone about your past relationships, it's telling your partner just how experienced you are with relationships.

Previous relationships are important to commemorate at least once in a while because we're supposed to learn from our mistakes.
Reply:this is a tricky one cos people are often a mine field of insecurities and when opening up about our past loves you never know how your bf/gf will handle it. In our relationships we want it all!! we want our bf/gf's to be open yet rarely have the stomach to handle hearing that they have ever loved anyone but us. The thought that the one we love might have loved someone more than ourselves is a always frightening possibility. This friend of yours is just in the process of facing those fears.. there really isn't much you can do to alleviate his worries... accept to tell him to talk to his girlfreind about it. He really needs to tell her that he loves her and for that reason feels this insecurity. If he doesn't talk to her about it, his insecuritues might get expressed in unhealthy ways.. ie.he might get snappy at his girlfriend over little things, or he might give her snarky digs about anything that triggers his insecure feelings. And she won't have a clue why. So hopefully if he tells her and she loves him, she will be able to reassure him that she has moved on from the past and that she loves him

AP Biology help?

This is the question:

While studying the plant Arabidopsis, a botanist finds that an RNA probe produces colored spots in the sepals of the plant. From this information, what information can be inferred?

A. The differently colored plants will attract different pollingating insects.

B. The RNA probe is transported only to certain tissues.

C. The colored regions were caused by mutations that occurred in the sepals.

D. The RNA probe is specific to a gene active in sepals.

E. More research needs to be done on the sepals of Arabidopsis.

Serious answers only, please!

AP Biology help?
D. All cells in the plant should have the same DNA (ignoring randomly scattered mutations). However, the DNA is only used for transcription (conversion into RNA) in places where the gene is active. In the places where the gene is active, the RNA will be used for translation, allowing the corresponding proteins to be formed.
Reply:I think it is D. The RNA probe will bind to its complementary DNA and produce color when developed (given that the probe is labeled, either fluorescent or radioactive). If the complementary DNA is found in the sepals, you will see color spots in the sepals.
Reply:Not 100% sure, but have taken AP bio in high school too.

I'm thinking it's D.

I don't understand the poem, "Departmental" by Robert Frost. Do you?????

An ant on the tablecloth

Ran into a dormant moth

Of many times his size.

He showed not the least surprise.

His business wasn't with such.

He gave it scarcely a touch,

And was off on his duty run.

Yet if he encountered one

Of the hive's enquiry squad

Whose work is to find out God

And the nature of time and space,

He would put him onto the case.

Ants are a curious race;

One crossing with hurried tread

The body of one of their dead

Isn't given a moment's arrest-

Seems not even impressed.

But he no doubts report to any

With whom he crosses antennae,

And they no doubt report

To the higher up at court.

Then word goes forth in Formic:

"Death's come to Jerry McCormic,

Our selfless forager Jerry.

Will the special Janizary

Whose office it is to bury

The dead of the commissary

Go bring him home to his people.

Lay him in state on a sepal.

Wrap him for shroud in a petal.

Embalm him with ichor of nettle.

This is the word of your Queen."

It represents human nature. The deviced used is a sing-song repitition. Work on your critical thinking skills such as level 6 thinking. I find that this poem is of level 6 thinking. Asking this question tells me that you're brain is at a level 2 thinking. Obviously your English teacher is in trouble!!! Also, I assume you're from the LAUSD district cuz gosh how bad you are. Good luck with your life.

1: A car mechanic is given a 1966 Mustang to fix. The owner's complaint is that the engine runs roughly, especially when the car is accelerating. The mechanic's first guess as to the source of the problem is that the fuel mix is too rich. After adjusting the fuel mix valve, the problem persists, so the mechanic then guesses that the sparkplug advance mechanism is faulty. Replacing the sparkplug advance mechanism (the diaphragm attached to the distributor) fixes the problem, and the fixed car is returned to the owner.

Why are smaller petals and sepals an advantage to flowers pollinated by the wind?

wind pollinated plants to not need to attract polinators like insects, birds and bats. The flower petals and sepals are adaptations that attract pollinators.

In addition, it is possible that petals and sepals get in the way of pollen flying around in the wind, and may inhibit pollen from sticking to the stigma.

incomplete

Help afew biology questions i need help with my book dosent explain it very well?
A walnut is most likely dispersed by animals eating it, because it is too heavy to be carried by the wind, healthy nuts sink in water, and they can't get caught in animals fur.

Double fertilization occurs inside the ovule.

The megaspore in a conifer becomes the female gametophyte.

A flower with sepals, petals, stamens, and pistils is called a complete flower because it has both male and female parts.
Reply:1. walnuts have a thick 'skin' around the nut, so this would have to be removed by an animal. Squirrels often bury nuts that they find and then forget them, which can result in germination and therefore seed dispersal.

2. In the ovule. One fertilizes the egg cell to form the embryo, the other fertilization gives rise to the endosperm.

3. I have a book entitled Plant Identification and Terminology that says the megaspore becomes the female gametophyte.

4. this would be a complete flower.

Sepals appear to be modified?

Just like petals seem to be modified leaves.

Does anyone know about sepals?

like in plants

Does anyone know about sepals?
SEPALS make up the lower (or outermost) whorl of floral leaves. They are frequently, but not always, green and rather leaf-like in appearance, although they usually are smaller than the foliage leaves of the plant. Collectively, all sepals of a flower constitute the CALYX. The major function appears to be protection of the flower parts during early development.

Friend for more u can click on this link too.

http://www.bio.utexas.edu/courses/bio406...
Reply:Sepals generally have two main functions:

1. protect the flower bud (You've seen the green part that covers a rose bud.)

2. support the petals of flowers after they have bloomed
Reply:A sepal is what protects the developing flower, although some plants do not have them.
Reply:They are usually the separate, green parts that surround and protect the flower bud and extend from the base of a flower after it has opened. Sepals tend to occur in the same number as the petals and to be centered over the petal divisions. In some species sepals are colored like petals, and they can even be indistinguishable from petals, as in the lilies (in what are called tepals). In some groups, such as the poppies, the sepals fall off after the flower bud opens.
